What is Urban Exchange?
Urban Exchange is a dynamic, two-way conversation between Winnipeggers and United Way. Everyone is welcome to participate. It’s a way for you to contribute thoughts and ideas that help make Winnipeg a better city for all of us.
Why is United Way of Winnipeg leading Urban Exchange?
United Way is leading Urban Exchange because we know from experience the value of Winnipeggers’ advice. The advice we received in a conversation we had with over 3200 Winnipeggers in 2000 led us to make important shifts in how we invest the donations we receive from Winnipeggers. And it led us to start new work to reduce poverty, connect with Aboriginal people and get youth involved – areas people told us were important to them. Urban Exchange is a way we continue to get advice from Winnipeggers so our work is responsive to their interests and concerns.
What will Urban Exchange accomplish?
Urban Exchange has several objectives.
To provide a way for Winnipeggers to share their ideas and opinions on social issues and opportunities in Winnipeg and know that they are helping to guide United Way’s work and investment in the community.
To provide United Way an ongoing way to hear from Winnipeggers so our decisions and actions are informed by what Winnipeggers believe is most important and we can continue to be connected to and directed by community interests and concerns.
To inspire new ways for individuals and groups to think about and participate in their community and encourage all community members to recognize that their values, actions, and ideas make a difference to their city.
Who can participate?
Everyone is welcome. You and all other interested Winnipeggers are invited to become members of the Urban Exchange Advisory Panel.
You can join Urban Exchange at any time and we hope will continue to participate for an extended time period. Please feel free to encourage your friends and family members to join so that they can also have their say and make a difference in our city.
What’s in it for me?
Urban Exchange is an excellent opportunity for all Winnipeggers to be heard!
Joining Urban Exchange is a way for you to contribute your thoughts and ideas to help make Winnipeg a better city for all of us. Urban Exchange is also a way to get connected and stay connected to your community.
As a member of the Urban Exchange Advisory Panel, you will have access to exclusive information and invitations to Urban Exchange events.

What does United Way of Winnipeg do with the information?
United Way combines your responses with those of other participants, and uses the summarized results to help guide and influence United Way ‘s planning and decision-making processes. We also share the summarized information with everyone who participates in Urban Exchange, with all Winnipeggers, and with other organizations that are interested in learning what Winnipeggers think.
For example, leaders in all levels of government received a copy of Urban Reflections, a report based on the findings of the first Urban Exchange survey.
How is information shared with the public?
United Way regularly communicates with Urban Exchange panelists and with all Winnipeggers about the collective ideas and opinions that emerge through Urban Exchange. This communication happens in a variety of ways – reports, newsletters, newspaper articles, and presentations at events.
We hope that this website is another great way to share the information we’re gathering through Urban Exchange.
Will you share my information and opinions with other groups?
